What is GFR and why does it matter?
GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) measures how well your kidneys filter waste from blood, expressed in mL/min/1.73m². It is the single best indicator of kidney function. Normal is above 90. Below 60 sustained for 3+ months indicates chronic kidney disease, which affects 10% of the global population.
Why does this calculator not use race?
The CKD-EPI 2021 equation removed the race coefficient following evidence that race is a social construct with no consistent biological basis for kidney filtration differences. The prior race adjustment was controversial and could delay diagnosis in Black patients. All major nephrology societies now recommend race-free equations.
Can I improve my GFR?
Mild decreases can stabilize or improve with blood pressure control, blood sugar management, adequate hydration, reducing salt, avoiding NSAIDs, and quitting smoking. Severely reduced GFR (below 30) is usually not reversible but its decline can be slowed significantly with proper management.
What creatinine level is concerning?
Normal serum creatinine ranges are approximately 0.7–1.2 mg/dL for men and 0.5–1.0 mg/dL for women. However, creatinine alone is misleading because it depends on muscle mass, age, and sex. Always interpret creatinine through the eGFR calculation, not as an isolated number.
How often should I check my GFR?
If your GFR is above 60 with no risk factors, every 1–2 years is sufficient. With diabetes, hypertension, or family history of kidney disease, check annually. Below 60, your doctor will typically monitor every 3–6 months depending on the rate of decline.
Is this calculator a medical diagnosis?
No. This provides an estimate based on the CKD-EPI 2021 equation. A single eGFR value is not a diagnosis. CKD is diagnosed when eGFR remains below 60 (or albuminuria is present) for at least 3 months on repeat testing. Always confirm results with your healthcare provider.
